Patreon Reimagined

This is video from the guy who made Patreon a thing ten years ago. I’m not quite as hyped as he is, about what’s coming, but I’m glad of it. I prefer my fires banked and efficient.

It really is a good platform, and not resting on its laurels.

I do have one concern.

Currently, Patreon and its associated processors (Stripe I think) are taking a cut of 7.5% of the total that people are sending me.

I feel that’s at the very high end of acceptable.

Just acceptable, specifically because of the new Early Access video functionality.

Here’s what concerns me.

Et cetera … it means they may start charging for the video functionality.

Over and above the 7.5 percent they get already.

A lot would depend on how much they wanted to charge, but my main worry is more about the price going up whenever they feel like it after that. In the end I just don’t want to end up over a barrel, more or less compelled to pay.

There are potential antidotes to that. I could for example just post all my videos at a wide-open place like Rumble, and link them down to Patreon … but I could essentially already do that from here, right?

Let’s see.

So … yeah … all formatting weirdness aside …

If it comes down to paying, I’d prefer not to, partly just because of the money, but more importantly because paying and still having no effective control of one’s own content would really suck.

Quite possibly I’m overthinking things again.

It won’t be the last time.
