Not a great movie, possibly not even a good one, and certainly the opposite of a noir. But interesting nevertheless, both because it feels like a real slice of life in the Ohio of 90 years gone past, and for secondary performances by the very young Bette Davis and the very young Humphrey Bogart.
Improbable shipboard romance starring Gary Cooper, Claudette Colbert, and a cute baby who is statistically likely to have passed on to the great beyond itself by now. It’s strange to think of all of these icons being of my grandparents’ generation.
I’ve absorbed a dozen or more to this point and this one is thus far the best. From the opening frames it’s just beautifully shot in a way that immediately says Orson Welles. He both directs and stars, alongside Edward G. Robinson and an especially intense performance from Loretta Young. Five stars and a must-watch.
