Debate One

The standard disclaimer is that they’re all just politicians, I don’t agree with any of them about everything, and that this is what I do instead of watching football for dumb and almost purely meaningless entertainment.

Rankings for night one.

Warren.
For policy and fire she’s a match for Sanders. The only actual downsides I’m aware of are:
a) she still says yes to capitalism and embraces that label (in contrast to Bernie’s socialism), and,
b) she went all wait-and-see last time and ended up endorsing Hillary, pointlessly, after the DNC maneuvered HRC into the nomination over the Bern.

Castro.
The fire is believably there, the policies are great, and his performance tonight was huge–extra extra points for the “pissed off” drop.

Inslee.
Came off a little less well in the short form tonight, but putting climate change at the top of the list is the right thing to do, and the rest squares too.

Gabbard.
Still not the deepest fan of her, but not because of anything particular in the policies. The military style maybe?

In slots five and six, DeBlasio and Booker. I like most of what they say, but always still get the (perhaps irrationally) paranoid feeling that I’m looking at Obama all over again, pretty words and get ready to be shanked and shoved under the bus in the name of the status quo if they win.

Klobuchar
Ryan
Delaney
The Beto

With a few rhetorical and exceptional bright spots (Ryan did okay): Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, we don’t get fooled again. The Beto was particularly wooden and wrongheaded tonight and I think he just stuck a fork in himself. A shame.

I’ll watch tomorrow and do a full correlated list of the twenty, plus bonus non-starters.

  1. An excellent but unintentionally funny quote from Castro, as promoted on his Twitter feed:

“I don’t believe in only reproductive freedom, i believe in reproductive justice. All women — and that includes the trans community — have the right to an abortion.”

You go, grrl, and i’m serious.
